The conference
The Shanxi China-US Youth Exchange Conference was one of the most unique experiences of the whole trip. It brought together students from our US group and a Chinese high school to share ideas and present projects in a forum style setting. Being split into smaller groups made it feel a lot more personal and discussion based than a typical presentation, and I thought that format made the whole thing more interesting and comfortable for everyone involved.
I was really glad to be part of an event like this. It was a prestigious opportunity and you could feel that going into it. Getting to sit in a room with students from a completely different country and culture and actually talk through things was a different experience than anything else we did on the trip.

My presentation
I chose to present on Chinese and American music, which felt like a natural fit for me since music is something I genuinely care about. As part of the presentation I included a project I had already done where I played both the Chinese and American national anthems on trumpet. Adding that made it feel a lot more personal and gave the audience something real to connect with rather than just slides and talking points.
I was really happy with how it was received. People seemed genuinely interested in the connection between the two cultures through music, which was exactly what I was going for. It felt good to present something I actually put work into and have people respond to it the way they did. That was one of the highlights of the conference for me.

Listening to others
I also really enjoyed hearing what other students presented on. Some of the topics that stood out to me were Chinese hip hop and traditional Chinese instruments. It was interesting to see how students on both sides were curious about each other's cultures, especially when it came to music and art. You could tell that even though we come from very different places, there was a lot of common ground when it came to the things people are passionate about.
Overall the conference showed me how easy it actually is to connect with people from other cultures when you find the right topics. Music ended up being that bridge for a lot of us in the room and that is something I did not expect going in but really appreciated by the end of it.

History and significance
China-US youth exchange programs like this one are designed to build mutual understanding between the two countries through education and personal connection. They are part of larger diplomatic efforts that recognize how important it is for young people from both nations to actually meet and talk with each other rather than just reading about one another from a distance.
The format of these exchanges encourages students to share their own cultures while also genuinely learning about others, which makes it a two way experience rather than a one sided one. Presenting and having discussions in a setting like this also helps develop communication skills and a sense of global awareness that is hard to get from a classroom alone.
What events like this highlight most is that despite all the differences between China and the US, younger generations have more in common than people might think. Music, art, and media especially have a way of connecting people across cultures that goes beyond language and politics. These kinds of exchanges matter because the students who participate in them are the ones who will eventually be shaping the relationship between these two countries, and starting that relationship early through genuine connection is something that has real value.
